5.8 Demonstrate research-based instructional practices to facilitate students' monitoring and self-correcting in reading.
It is important for students to know that they are improving. It shows them that practice makes them better, and it allows them to see where they can improve. We do weekly fluency readings. We will do a cold read on Monday and mark how many words they can read per minute. They are supposed to read every night with their parents, and have their parents sign off on it. Then on Friday, they read again to see how much they have improved with words per minute. This is one of my favorite activities to do with them because they love seeing themselves improve. I also do a running record while they read so I can see which words they have corrected themselves on since the first reading. Since we have started this a couple months ago, reading scores have improved.
