5.7 Demonstrate research-based instructional practices for developing both academic and domain specific vocabulary.

It is important to teach children domain specific vocabulary so they actually know what they are reading. For this center activity, we used leveled readers and learned about Cascarones. It is a Spanish tradition to bring good luck. People empty out an egg, clean it out, and fill it with confetti. They then decorate the outside of them. When they are finished, they crack them open over someones head to bring them good luck. When we finished reading them, we created our own Cascarones. Then we went outside and broke them over each other's heads to try out the tradition. The students were able to learn about another culture's traditions in the process.
