5.2 Demonstrate research-based instructional practices for facilitating reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension is crucial in a child's academic development. Children can sound out words, but if they don't understand what they are reading, then they will not be able to gain meaning from that text. In the activity above, the students created bubble maps about fairy tales. They were to come up with as many fairy tale traits as they could to complete their bubble maps. This was done as a small group activity. It helped them pull out the specifics of what made a story a fairy tale, separating it from other types of genres. It also helped them answer the comprehension questions that were in the book. This is a weekly activity that the students do during center times as one of their rotations.
