5.15 Teach Writer's Workshop and the writing process. Model and share mini lessons on writing topics and explicitly scaffold instruction for student writing success. Use mentor texts to model innovative styles for writing. Help your students to see themselves as writers with an authentic purpose using multiple genres.

My students have a hard time getting motivated to write. The district tests contain a lot of writing, so it is hard to make it fun for them. We decided to use Fun Friday to scaffold the writing process and break it up so it wasn't so tedious. The students had to learn the different parts of opinion writing and how to structure it, so we turned popcorn into a little mini unit. We started by showing them a video of how a popcorn kernel actually pops. Then I read them The Popcorn Book. I passed out information sheets and had them separate fact and opinon so they didn't get confused on what they should be writing. When they finished the first writing part, I gave them all regular butter popcorn, caramel popcorn, and white cheddar popcorn. They had to taste test all of them and decide which one they liked the best. This would be the basis of their practice opinion writing. They had to write their opening sentence stating which was their favorite, give three reasons why it was the best, and write a closing sentence. This activity made it much more fun for them with writing.
